H functionalization: Palladium-catalyzed synthesis of benzofurans and coumarins by reacting phenols and unactivated olefins is described. The reaction comprises sequential CH functionalization and shows diverse functional group compatibility. Preliminary mechanistic studies shed light into the possible mechanisms.
